Around 50 cars have been marked with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.

Automobiles, exterior walls and postboxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they reported in a release.

Law enforcement say they were notified during the night on Wednesday night, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued substance.

The fluid had been applied in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they added.

Police then located multiple other vandalized automobiles and residential walls in the surrounding area.

These symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.

Law enforcement state initial examinations indicate the fluid was probably blood from a person.

"At present there remains no clue as to where it came from; investigators are not yet aware of any injuries in association with the occurrence," they commented.

City officials said they were attempting "to solve the incident" and have requested to the community for details.

A high-ranking official commented the attack made him without words and needed to be solved quickly.

"This event hits the center of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist violent incident in 2020," he wrote on a platform, referring to the murder of nine individuals by a assailant targeting individuals of immigrant origin in February 2020.
