The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was convicted of plotting a government overthrow in September and sentenced more than 27 years in jail, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" came to light.

This included trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the custody, the judge said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of orchestrating a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the national vote to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
